What fun we have playing with bubbles around our house! You can make your own bubble fun play with a simple empty spool of thread and your favorite castile liquid soap. Can’t get much better than this for frugal fun!
Supplies:
Empty spool of thread
Castile liquid soap (Dawn’s dishwashing soap, Dr. Bronner’s or Trader Joe’s castile soap all work well! I prefer the natural castile soap as my little girl likes to eat the bubbles!)
Water
Combine about 1 Tablespoon soap with 1/4 cup water in a small container. Dip one end of the empty spool into your soap and blow out the other end! I store the spool in the container with a lid until future use. An 8 oz jam jar works perfect. Have fun!
Lindsay, I was looking for your email address since I have a specific question for you, but can’t find it. I am thinking of investing in some Dr. Bronner’s soaps, and was wondering what you’d recommend. I haven’t started making many homemade products yet, but am interested in trying more (the dishwashing soap is next on my list!). I have done a search on your blog and found some, but was wondering which ones you’d recommend. Also, I see that the Sal Suds has SLS…is that ok?
I have only tried Dr. Bronner’s Peppermint & Baby Mild liquid castile soaps along with Sal Suds. I find the peppermint is far too strong for our family. Baby Mild is a good multi-purpose soap for shampoo, soap, bodycare, etc if you have munckins in the house, but I find myself using Sal Suds more frequently now with cleaning (dishwasher/dishwashing soap) as it is a more effective cleaning agent. I love Dr. Bronner’s, bought on your recommendation! Do you know if Trader Joes has the baby mild variety? I heard that TJs is much cheaper for this product than Whole Foods. I know Amazon carries 2 bottles for $21-something, which is better than the Whole Foods price…I’m just not sure about TJs.
The other day, I accidentally knocked over a large glass of unsweetened cranberry juice all over my light gray carpet. OH NO, especially since we rent! It looked like a homicide had taken place. So I figured I would try to clean it how I would clean blood – hydrogen peroxide. I poured teeny amounts all over the huge splashes (next time I’d use a spray bottle) and sopped it up with a microfiber towel. I think the peroxide helped it from attaching itself to the carpet. Then I filled a spray bottle with a drop of Dr. Bronner’s baby mild and water and it came ALL OUT. It looks so good and feels so good (none of that nasty crunchiness) that I’m considering going through my apartment and getting out the past tenants’ stains (that were supposedly steam cleaned professionally as a condition to us signing the lease a year ago). The whole situation really sold the idea of non-toxic cleaners, and especially hydrogen peroxide and Dr. Bronners, on my “clean freak” engineer husband. YAY!
TJ’s just sells the peppermint version of Dr Bronners, but they do sell just a standard TJ version of castile soap (made by TJ). Thanks for sharing your success!

I remember setting up a fan and towels to have lots of bubble fun. I would brush on the liquid to the front of the fan and turn it on low. LOTS of bubbles and squealing kids! We’ve done this outside and inside.
