A Great Task

“I long to accomplish a great and noble task, but it is my chief duty to accomplish humble tasks as though they were great and noble. The world is moved along not by the mighty shoves of its heroes, but by the aggregate of the tiny pushes of each honest worker…”

~Helen Keller

This quote has brought great encouragement to me when I have been overwhelmed by feeling like cleaning, cooking, taking care of my little one are insignificant. Each humble task is so important if done with a heart that views it as a great and noble task!

While at a gathering at our church last time discussing the topic of parenting, this thought was shared:

The greatest thing you may ever do is to raise your children and to include them in your lives!

How full of truth that is! Of all the important things we may accomplish in this life, raising our children to love the Lord and include them in serving the Lord together with us, is a high calling, and one not to be taken lightly or passed off to the “professionals”!

Blessings upon you as you view the humble tasks as glorious whatever season of your life!

Undistracted Devotion – Part 2

In part 1 of this series, I shared the call that Paul presents in 1 Corinthians 7 to live holy both in body and spirit as women of God, and remain devoted to service of our King. How do we go about this?

First, I would like to address a comment I received on the previous post. This woman brought up a few valid points that would be important to address before we move on in. I wish to thank her for presenting these concerns and allowing me the opportunity to address them

Rita W. said:

This is all very interesting but I can tell you from having been unmarried and married that being married is a much healthier and joy filled life. There is not more time when a woman is single totally the opposite. If you need gas in the car even though tired or ill you must get it yourself and the same with groceries, errands, house cleaning, repairs etc. There is no one to share life with and no one who asks how you are doing? The married are interested in their own lives how husband or wife is doing and the rest of the family and rightly so. At the same time singleness is treated just like you did – how wonderful it is – how glorious to serve? When is there time or the funds after taking care of mother and father? My opinion is that this post is tilted in the wrong direction. Ask a single girl and if she is honest she is exhausted and lonely and hanging to the scriptures for dear life. Praying that somehow life will expand to include more family, friends, and if meant to be a future husband.

Resources for Singles

roses.JPG “Singleness has been a noble and courageous path…ever since Jesus and the Apostle Paul chose it ‘because of the kingdom of heaven’…The courage comes when you sense God calling you to singleness (for this chapter of your life) and you accept the call with zeal and creative planning for His glory.” - John Piper

I love the way Paul addresses singles in 1 Cor. 7:34-35:

“An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world – how she can please her husband. I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord.”

I wanted to recommend a few resources for your attention.

10 Ways to Love Your Hubby without Saying A Word

  1. Clean Laundry – clean socks, clean t-shirts, and clean under garments folded & put away. I have found that my husband is blessed when I iron his shirts for him as well!
  2. Warm Bread, Favorite Meal, and a Cold Beverage (or just a nice dessert) waiting on the table when he comes home. (Maybe not necessary every night. I aim for a special meal or dessert once a week.) Serve him a candlelight dinner every once in a while!
  3. Not nagging during those times when he needs to rest and relax (whether it be sports, video games, computer, or newspaper time) to be doing something else. My hubby enjoys resting in front of a movie once a week, and although I sometimes would prefer talking, I need to give him room to relax! Or just giving him room to watch a manly movie! That is a blessing to him, instead of demanding the more romance ones!
  4. Not nagging period.
  5. Not nagging about your period. ;) (that would be me!)
  6. Smiling when your eyes meet his.
  7. Washing his truck, car, motorcycle…whatever his big boy toy might be. (Bonus points for cleaning the interior too Ladies!)
  8. Stopping whatever “busy” work you might be doing to just sit and join him in whatever activity he is doing. (My hubby loves building puzzles – I need to learn to enjoy this hobby with him, even though it isn’t my favorite!)
  9. Hold his hand whenever you can. Be it the mall, the grocery, the neighborhood, or at church. Just whenever you can.
  10. Get to bed before him, take a nice warm bath, put on some perfumed lotion, something frilly or whatever you know he likes and wait.

Pointing Children to God – Tribute to My Parents -Part 2

jen_3909_dxo.jpg
My family at our wedding (almost two years ago now!)
My siblings include (current ages): Stephen (25, married to Larissa), Christa (20), Kelly (17), Sam (16), Dan (14), Brandon & Brooke (10).

For part 1, visit here.

Coming from a large family, the challenge for my parents was to direct all eight of us children to God! They aren’t done either. How do you raise children to love the Lord? I am sure my parents would tell you it is only by humble dependence upon the Lord and through His grace, but here are a few things I thank my parents for being faithful in which helped reveal to me my desperate need for a Savior.

Pointing Children to God: Tribute to my Parents – Part 1

holding-hands.JPGI have had a request to share what things my parents did to point me to God. It would be a delight to share!

It is a joyful blessing to have been raised by godly Christian parents. What a treasure and honor it is indeed! I come from a broken extended family…with divorced unsaved grandparents, who were pretty much not involved in our lives at all. I rejoice that my children will have godly grandparents to treasure them and play with them!
What did my parents do that helped point us to God?
