The Skirt that works for it all!

skirt1I love this skirt! Do you know why? It is one of those pieces that can work with everything. Brown is a wonderful color! But not only that, it is the most comfortable skirt I own and it works beautifully for when I am pregnant and also when I am not. The best investment of my money on clothing has been to find items that work for both regular and maternity use. This skirt has a fold over waist that canĀ  pulled up over your belly, giving such wonderful support especially during pregnancy. It is fun and cute for everyday wear! Plus…this skirt is available through the clothing business, Christa-Taylor, that my sister and family started two years ago. Just a little plug!img_53112

So when you think you need maternity clothes…consider all the wonderful options out there that can work for both seasons of life.

Empire waist tops are another excellent choice. I have one non-maternity empire waist top in particular that is long and cute and still fits me at 37 weeks! Tunics are a fun multi-purpose addition as well. You can use belts with your tunics prior to pregnancy and then either remove the belt or let it rest above your expanding belly. See how my sisters use belts here. I also don’t bother with maternity pajamas…a large shirt and some sweat pants will do! It may not work for everyone, but I have definitely been able to save a few dollars by thinking in advance before every clothing purchase. Could this be multi-purpose?

That’s my frugal tip for the day!

Could the site of where to purchase this skirt be sent to my e-mail? I clicked on the highlighted link, but it was not working.
    I’d so much appreciate it!

Sorry, Hannah, but the skirt is no longer available. The Christa-Taylor clothing company is now a photography business.

How tall are you? I am about 5’3″ and really LOVE the skirt but I am afraid it would hit me too low in the calf. Thanks!

What a lovely skirt! A bit too pricey for me, but I imagine it could be worn with just about everything. I thought you were going to say you made it. :)

Lindsey, I’ve been meaning to ask, what does your grocery budget look like? I’ve been trying to think of ways to slash ours, and I just knew you’d be a wealth of information on that topic.

    Thanks and God bless!

I make myself drawstring skirts (full, gathered), for this very reason. They work in early, mid-, and late pregnancy, right afterward, and while I’m “skinny,” nursing or not nursing. Very versatile!

I really like that skirt. I find that when I’m pregnant and try to wear normal clothes that they get stretched out and don’t look good anymore. So I find it better to wear maternity when possible!

That waistband looks so nice! It almost reminds me of a bella band. Has anyone tried one of those?
I’ve made my own maternity skirts(they’re very hard to find!), with a stretchy panel just in front, not all the way around.

I must say I do have a bag of maternity clothes. But the hardest time for me is the in-between times, as in just getting a belly, and postpartum. It seems like nothing fits and I just look fat! Thankfully I’ll be more prepared this time around, as I’ve aquired a few things. Gotta love the empire waist and tunic style tops! Skirts are more of a problem when you can’t zip them! Hmm…I wonder if I can make my own bella band….I just googled it and found patterns! How neat! (Sorry for rambling!)

I bought a bella band this time around and it was wonderful! I’m still using it postpartum for those outfits where I need my flabby belly smoothed our a bit :)

I have made my own belly bands by buying (or repurposing clothes I already owned!)polyester/spandex blend tank tops or tee shirts and cutting off the arm and neck hems. Tuck under (or finish the edge) of the raw end (which you’d use on the top) and the bottom is already finished. My belly band? I already had it in the closet…just needing scissors…with no sewing!!

I love the skirt! And like many others have mentioned, you look fabulous! I have a couple of questions about the skirt: I am wondering how it would do in terms of travel? i.e., does it wrinkle easily? Can I roll it up in a ball in my suitcase? I have one brown skirt currently that I am wanting to update, and it is an awesome travel item. How do you find its versatility in terms of tops/shoes? Can it be dressed down and dressed up? With a simple t-shirt or a nice blouse? Sandals, runners or flats? Just trying to make sure that it would be appropriate for my wardrobe! Thanks in advance for answering these questions!! :)

Very nice skirt- Thanks for sharing about your sis’s blog- I had checked it out last week and liked the clothes. Very cute pic! I agree with you- My brain only thinks can I nurse in this? can I be pregnant in this? can I be not pregnant in this? I can’t wait til you have that baby and we can see the cute little pics and read about the birth:)

I don’t know if that skirt would work for my short 5-foot tall frame, but I love, love, LOVE tunics! They make anything look modest and feminine. Your belly is adorable, Lindsay. Praying for a great delivery!

I have that skirt! My husband gave me both colors for Christmas. I love it for the same reasons you said. Not only is it super comfortable and good as a maternity skirt…but it also help camouflage the post baby tummy:)

Agreed! One need not run out and stock up on new maternity clothes the moment one starts showing! My best pieces lately (I’m 31 weeks) have been the one nice pair of maternity jeans I own, and thrift store empire blouses and long tank tops.

I also found the most comfortable pajamas for $2 at an estate sale — apparently a nice old lady had sewn them for herself, and they fit my pregnant body perfectly! :-)

I just discovered a wardrobe item that I think is pretty ingenious. At toplessundershirts.com they make, just what it sounds like, topless undershirts that can be worn all the time! Non pregnant, pregnant, and nursing alike! I ordered some for myself now that I’m nursing my little one, and don’t want to expose bare skin when we’re out in public.

My sister, by the way, loves your sister’s site and blog. She has learned a lot about modesty and fashion from her articles. Tell her to keep up the good work!

My pregnancy days are far behind me, but I do have a very versatile, favorite brown skirt that I LOVE to wear. You look very cute in this!

Congratulations on the impending birth of baby #2. I am new to your blog, but enjoying it immensely!

Love it! You look fabulous, btw.

Pretty! I’m with you – I’d love to have more items in my wardrobe that work for longer periods of time (preggo AND all those in-between stages). I just discovered your sister’s site and blog, and really enjoy how she’s “married” modesty with style. Thanks for sharing.

When I was pregnant low rise pants and jeans just came into style. I lucked out, I could wear them and not really need any maternity jeans or pants. I did buy some maternity shirts, but I also raided my hubby’s closet. He wears a suit to work almost everyday, so I could borrow one of his dress shirts to wear.

That’s a cute skirt! But since I’m short 5’3 I stay away from any long skirts. They make me look REALLY short.
