Homemade Pasta!

My sisters, mom and I enjoyed the afternoon making homemade pasta yesterday which we made into ravioli’s. This is one of our fun family traditions for our Christmas dinner celebration – bringing out the Italian side of us! It has been a delight to establish our own unique traditions and especially in ways that help build and strengthen our family relationships! So many fun laughs together!

Want to make your own pasta? Pasta Makers work wonderfully! We use unbleached white flour as it is a special treat in the first place, but I have heard it is possible to also make whole wheat pasta with these machines.  It’s a fun family event to make together! We have also had several fun parties in the past inviting others to make pasta with us and enjoy it over dinner. The recipe comes with the machine and is actually quite simple to do, but a similar recipe with instructions is available here. Unfortunately, I don’t think you can make soaked pasta with this machine or at least I have never attempted it, but probably pasta from sprouted dough (for a soaked pasta or sprouted pasta recipe read here).

    Hi Lindsay,
Darling baby bump!! I am mostly norwegian, so we do a lot of scandinavian foods for special occasions. When we were kids, we would make lefse and leave it for Santa instead of cookies. Steve is Danish, but he didn’t really grow up with the foods, poor dear.

What kind of ravioli’s did you make?

It was a sausage & spinach combination. My mom mixed up the ingredients so I cannot say for certain.

We do Italian food for Christmas too. We’re untraditional in the fact that we don’t do traditional American Christmas food, nor do we do traditional Italian Christmas food (fish feast). :)

I’m sure your mom hears this all of the time, but she looks just like one of the sisters! ;)

That is so cool. I tried making ravioli completely by hand and I obviously couldn’t get the dough thin enough! It was horribly chewy. So I looked into a kitchen aid attachment and it was $200 on sale! This little pasta contraption is good to know about!

Awww, I love your family! That is so fun! I have to figure out Christmas traditions to do with boys as they get older. :)

Hi, my sister sent me the link to your website because I have been wanting a pasta maker so I could learn to make tortellini. You make ravioli look easy. My husband came home with a pasta maker last night! I am excited to learn. I will check your blog often.
    Thanks.Lou

That was so much fun. I just put all the raviolis in the freezer for Christmas. I think you should be able to take a bag home too.

Thanks for joining us once again to keep the tradition alive!

Awe! I have two little girls, and seeing pictures of you and your sisters made me hope to have more girls in the future. (I guess boys are fun too, but i have no experience with them! ) :) Thanks for sharing your family with us.

Hi Lindsay! I’m inspired again to try to make pasta. I have a pasta attachment on my k-tech kitchen machine, but I haven’t tried it yet. That pasta machine you recommended was very reasonable.

    God bless!

So that’s what your mom looks like when not in “Goth” costume. :) I love how you and your sisters all have the same smile. It looks like you all were having lots of fun. It makes me wish I had a sister! I have two lovely sisters-in-law, but it’s not quite the same. I really should try making pasta sometime. It looks too delicious!

Wow you and you sisters look so much alike! What a great family project. By the way I’m pregnant too (20 weeks) so I love following along with you! Okay, off to go obsess over your baby related posts. This is my first so there’s lots to learn!

Wow, I have never heard of another family that makes ravioli for Christmas every year besides ours. Oh, I knew that they must be out there, but that’s just fabulous. We make small square ones rather than the round ones I see here; but the tradition is just awesome and so special!

I have never seen sisters look so much alike! You and your family are so beautiful! I have never made my own pasta before. I have always been nervous to try it!

Looks like so much fun!! What a great tradition. I love making homemade pasta, but you’re right I don’t think the soaked would work in the machine, some healthier flours don’t work well in the machine at all because it is too “sticky” and breaks apart to easily when trying to put it through the machine. Or at least that’s what I’ve found. The whole wheat works great though. After the holidays I’m going to try different ways of making pasta, trying different flours, mixing flours…. just to see what works. If it doesn’t work well in the machine, I can still roll it out and use it for at least chicken noodle soup. :)
