Came across this quote in the Tightwad Gazette that got me thinking.
“N is for nuts. I figure you’d have to be nuts to pay $4 a pound [back in the 90's] for something that only adds a bit of crunch to a cookie. At best, they are a healthful extravagence. Instead, I buy bulk, shelled sunflower seeds from a local health food store. On sale, they are 89 cents a pound [also back in the 90's].”
Aaron & I have never been real bigs fans of nuts, and I have been turned off by the high costs for good quality raw nuts in health food stores (average of $10 per pound for organic, raw walnuts). Could seeds be a more frugal alternative without losing out on the nutrition of nuts?
Here are the facts.
Consumer studies consistently find that sunflower seeds, for example, are recognized as high in fiber and more nutritious than nuts. Rich in protein, sunflower kernels contain no cholesterol and hold primarily unsaturated fat. Sunflower kernels can be substituted for any nut in a formulation-often at a price advantage. Raw organic sunflower seeds sell for around $3 per pound. Interesting?
Stay tuned for a series of posts on the wonders of seeds and how to use them!
You are not kidding nuts are pricey! I can’t live without them though! I eat walnuts on my oatmeal and use raw cashews in one of my morning smoothies. I use almond flour in baking and making almond milk! I’ll have to check into the seeds and see what I can replace!
I have 25 lbs. of raw, organic, shelled walnuts taking up space in my kitchen. You have encouraged me to go ahead and do what I was thinking of doing–blessing others with a pound or two. Want some?
